The apparel sector has an important role to play in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Setting science-based targets (SBTs) that are aligned with the level of decarbonization required to keep global temperature rise well below 2° Celsius is a powerful way for companies to boost their competitive advantage and ensure they are doing their part to reach a 2-degree world.

The Science Based Targets initiative—a partnership between CDP, World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)—supports companies in setting SBTs by defining and promoting best practice, offering tools and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assessing and approving companies’ targets.

Please join WRI for a webinar on June 22, 10:00 – 11:30 EDT to learn about plans for development of apparel sector guidance on setting science-based GHG reduction targets and opportunities for participation.

The guidance will provide clarity on credible approaches for setting SBTs for company operations (scopes 1 and 2), and setting ambitious targets for value chain (scope 3) emissions. WRI will lead a 16- month, multi-stakeholder process to develop the guidance, working closely with apparel sector companies and other stakeholders to reach agreement on key technical issues.

Sponsors of this guidance currently include Nike, Lenzing and Target. Participants include Arc’teryx, eBay Inc., Gap, Inc., and Levi Strauss & Co. Additional collaborators are welcome.
