ANNOUNCEMENT: ISO and GHG Protocol Finalize Joint Working Group to Develop Product-Level Accounting Standard

Following a strong and competitive process, GHG Protocol is pleased to announce the nomination of its participants to the Joint Working Group (JWG) dedicated to supporting the development of an updated and harmonized product-level GHG accounting standard with ISO.

This marks an important milestone in the strategic partnership between ISO and GHG Protocol. Through the partnership at large, ISO and GHG Protocol are stewarding the development of a harmonized, science-aligned global system for accounting and reporting GHG emissions – mandated by the COP30 Presidency as a key pillar of the Action Agenda. The updated product-level standard is a core priority of this.

GHG Protocol received more than 450 submissions, including applicants from 50+ countries and over 410 organizations across diverse sectors and industries, showing the immense interest in the development of international standards at this critical juncture for climate action. The full list of GHG Protocol members span multiple backgrounds and geographies to ensure a breadth of knowledge and perspectives, and can be found on GHG Protocol’s governance page. They will join forces with experts from ISO to lead the development of the joint Product Standard.

Building on ISO and GHG Protocol’s existing frameworks (ISO 14067 and GHG Protocol Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard), the updated standard will maintain continuity while advancing toward a unified global methodology, in line with the changing needs of corporates, investors and regulators, and responding to growing demand for granular emissions data from across value chains. The joint standard will promote credible decarbonization strategies, enhance market transparency, and enable implementation of mechanisms such as Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms (CBAMs), which rely on robust, product‑level emissions accounting.

“This Joint Working Group is a key pillar of the ISO and GHG Protocol partnership. We are grateful for all those who have volunteered their time to participate in the nomination process and support our shared goal of harmonization. We are delighted about the work already underway and look forward to continuing our engagement with all experts in this space to ensure credible and implementable outcomes,” said Amir Safaei, GHG Protocol’s Co-Convener of the Product Working Group.

To learn more about the product level accounting workstream and the progress that is being made, join ISO and GHG Protocol for the second webinar in the COP Action Agenda series on harmonizing global carbon accounting standards on April 24 at 9:00am ET/3:00pm CET.

The webinar will explore why product-level accounting is critical in enabling transparency, comparability and informed decision-making across value chains and explore the latest developments in this space. The session will also provide insight into the joint work underway between GHG Protocol and ISO to advance alignment in the Product Standard, highlight how stakeholders can support the process, and offer an opportunity to ask questions.

The first webinar in the series, focused on efforts to harmonize global carbon accounting standards and support more aligned measurement of emissions, can be accessed here
