Director of Communications
Karen Richards is the Director of Communications for the GHG Protocol. Based in London, Karen joined the organization in April 2026.
In her role, Karen leads the GHG Protocol communications team, responsible for designing and delivering the strategic function for the world’s leading authority on corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions accounting. She oversees global narrative development, stakeholder engagement and the communication activities underpinning the next generation of GHG Protocol standards.
Prior to her current role, Karen spent several years in global roles at WWF, where she led international media coordination at UN Climate COPs and contributed to broader advocacy and policy efforts, before moving to Unilever to work at the intersection of sustainability, communications and corporate affairs. Having seen first-hand the impact of ambitious Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategies, Karen advocates for bringing stakeholders together across the value chain to address the climate-nature crisis, and for communicating environmental complexity with clarity and credibility.
Karen studied English and Communications at Cardiff University and has achieved several awards and recognitions throughout her career, including the Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA) award for best campaign in the NGO sector and best in-house initiative across all sectors. During her time in the procurement function at Unilever, the organization was presented with the Procurement Excellence Award by Procurement Leaders.
In her spare time, Karen enjoys spending time outdoors in nature, walking her rescue dog and also serves as co-chair of her local PTA (Parent Teacher Association).
