GHG Protocol Newsletter: February 2026

Letter from GHG Protocol Steering Committee Chair

To start off the year, Geraldine Matchett, GHG Protocol's Steering Committee Chair, shares a powerful message: “We need a harmonized carbon accounting system that provides clarity, builds trust and unlocks investment.” This work will shape the future of climate accounting and reporting and accelerate real world impact, and it has already begun. Read Geraldine's letter to learn more about why 2026 will be a pivotal year for harmonized carbon accounting.

Watch the Recording: ISO-GHG Protocol COP Action Agenda Webinar

Last year, we shared ISO and GHG Protocol's joint mandate to harmonize global carbon accounting under the COP30 Action Agenda. On 20 February, GHG Protocol and ISO hosted a webinar to share the scope and planned approach for delivery, including more insights into work underway to jointly update both our product-level and corporate standards. Now Available: Land Sector and Removals Standard

On January 30, GHG Protocol launched the Land Sector and Removals Standard – the first GHG Protocol Standard to provide greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting requirements and guidance that equip companies with the methods needed to quantify, report, and track land emissions, CO₂ removals, and other key metrics. This Standard also offers companies accounting requirements and guidance to report technological CO₂ removals (e.g. direct air capture) and CO₂ capture with geologic storage. Access the LSR Standard, the Executive Summary, and supporting resources here. Supporting resources include an overview article and Frequently Asked Questions resource.

Watch the Recording: Land Sector and Removals Launch Webinar

On February 12, GHG Protocol hosted a webinar to commemorate the launch of the new Land Sector and Removals Standard. In the session, speakers demonstrated how the LSR Standard provides companies with road-tested methods to report land-sector impacts with the same rigor as energy use. Panelists also explained how these rules equip businesses—from global food producers to apparel retailers—to track their progress and disclose their climate impact with confidence. If you missed the live session, you can review the webinar recording and webinar slide deck

Scope 2 and Electricity-Sector Consequential Methods Public Consultations

Two public consultations were held between October 20, 2025 and January 31, 2026: One focusing on updates to the Scope 2 Guidance (2015) which addresses inventory accounting, and one on consequential accounting methods for estimating avoided emissions from electricity-sector actions.

Across both consultations, GHG Protocol received almost 1,400 responses. GHG Protocol is now working through evaluation of this feedback. Summaries of both consultations will be shared in the coming months, along with the full set of responses. All materials will be posted on the public consultations landing page
