Update on Greenhouse Gas Protocol Carbon Removals and Land Sector Initiative

Since January, WRI and WBCSD have been leading development of new Greenhouse Gas Protocol guidance on accounting for land sector activities and CO2 removals in corporate greenhouse gas inventories, building on the Corporate Standard and Scope 3 Standard.

Over the last several months, the project’s Technical Working Groups and Advisory Committee, together comprised of over 100 subject-matter experts, have discussed GHG accounting and reporting options and started drafting the new guidance. The guidance will explain how companies should account for emissions and removals from land use, land use change, biogenic products, technological CO2 removals, and related activities in GHG inventories.

Previously we envisioned producing three related guidance documents, but we are now developing a consolidated output bringing together all workstreams into a single guidance document.

For a description of the project and development process, including a list of Advisory Committee and Technical Working Group members, please click here.

The draft guidance is expected to be available for both pilot testing and review in June 2022. Publication is expected in early 2023.

We appreciate your support for this project and will continue to provide periodic updates on the progress of this work.
