Welcome to the Pilot Testing resource website hosted by the GHG Protocol.

This site provides copies of the materials, resources and contacts for the pilot testing of the UENP SBCI WRI Common Carbon Metric (CCM) protocol and Calculation Tool & Reporting Template for the building sector. The FAQs will be updated frequently by WRI as pilot testers encounter practical questions and challenges in compiling their building GHG inventories. For contact points at WRI, please see below.

The Common Carbon Metric (CCM) Protocol

This document describes the core methodologies used in assessing the energy use and related GHG emissions from building operations. It should be read before using the Tool. The “Metric” section describes the types of performance metrics computed, the “Protocol” section explains the methodology underlying the calculations, and the “Appendices” provide the definitions, emission factors and other information critical to understanding and using the Tool.

The Calculation Tool & Reporting Template

This Excel-based tool calculates the GHG emissions using either a Top-Down or Bottom-Up approach. The Top-Down approach requires energy use data and building information for an entire group of buildings, typically for entire cities. The Bottom-Up approach requires these same data and information, but for individual buildings. The two approaches are designed to be complementary: the benchmarking function in the Tool allows the performance of large building stocks to be compared to that of a selected sample of individual buildings.

The CCM Protocol and Tool were drafted over the past year by UNEP-SBCI and WRI based on stakeholder meetings and feedback. They are now being pilot tested to:

• Gain critical feedback concerning relevancy for the sector, and the mechanics/design of the tool.

• Use pilot inventories or data as initial case studies.

A further objective is to begin developing a list of additional resources and references relating to energy and GHG measurement/ management for the sector.

Timeline for the Pilot Process

May 19, 2010: Formal launch of the pilot test at the UNEP-SBCI annual meeting in Paris

June and July 2010: Read through CCM, collect building data and enter into Tool

July 31, 2010: Submit inventories generated through the Tool

August 6 2010: Submit feedback to WRI via one-on-one conversations with WRI staff, via edits made directly in a copy of the CCM, or via the Comment Form (see below).
