GHG Protocol and ISO Welcome COP30 Action Agenda to Harmonize Carbon Accounting
GHG Protocol and ISO have been recognized as the key implementation partners for harmonized carbon accounting standards across the corporate, project and product level within the COP30 Action Agenda, following the Presidency's call for robust carbon accounting frameworks. GHG Protocol and ISO formally launched the Plan to Harmonize Global Carbon Accounting Standards in a workshop at COP30 hosted by the COP30 Presidency, alongside the High-Level Champions, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil and UNIDO. The session emphasized that collaboration is essential to accelerating global decarbonization efforts, showcased how GHG Protocol and ISO will create international alignment and invited all ambitious, Paris-aligned leaders to contribute to a harmonized GHG accounting system. GHG Protocol and ISO Advance Global Harmonization at ISO Environmental Management International Plenary 2025
GHG Protocol participated in the ISO Environmental Management International Plenary 2025, Oct 25 – Nov 1, in Toronto, where the organizations formally announced that they will be convening a Joint Working Group (JWG) to co-develop the new product-level GHG accounting standard (further details also below). The meeting also launched parallel work to align corporate and project-level accounting standards, including those from the ISO 1406X family and the GHG Protocol corporate suite. Applications for the ISO–GHG Protocol Joint Working Group Are Now Closed
The application window to participate in the Joint Working Group (JWG) to develop the new product-level GHG accounting standard in partnership with ISO officially closed on November 30, 2025. We are excited to share that we received 459 applications from across sectors and regions. We sincerely thank everyone who applied and expressed interest in contributing to this important work.
The GHG Protocol Secretariat is now conducting a thorough review of all applications received and will propose a selection of candidates for the GHG Protocol Independent Standard Board approval. If specific gaps are identified during this process, the Secretariat will recruit additional members on a rolling basis to address those gaps. Confirmations of acceptance and the list of selected JWG members will be communicated publicly in the first quarter of 2026.
Actions and Market Instruments Technical Working Group In-Person Workshop
The Actions and Market Instruments (AMI) Technical Working Group (TWG) met earlier this month in Washington D.C., to discuss the AMI White Paper currently in development, which will be the basis for a public consultation in Q1 of 2026.
More than half of the TWG joined in person, while other participants joined online. In their feedback, participants highlighted that they particularly appreciated the live discussions, the spirit of a shared purpose, learning from practical examples from different sectors and the constructive work undertaken in breakout sessions.
"The successful in-person workshop was a milestone in the acceleration of the AMI work. The whole team was deeply impressed by the commitment and engagement of all participants on site and online - even during late hours given the different time zones," said Ralf Pfitzner, acting lead of the AMI workstream.
