WASHINGTON DC (April 17, 2025) – GHG Protocol is pleased to announce five new Observing Entities to its Independent Standards Board (ISB), representing the following organizations: CDP, European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Observing Entities are standard-setting or disclosure organizations with a standard, framework, or platform based on or referencing GHG Protocol. In line with GHG Protocol’s commitment to advancing harmonization across the GHG accounting and reporting ecosystem, these five organizations will participate in a non-voting capacity in ISB meetings that are focused on standard development or revision.
For more information about the Observing Entities’ role, please see the ISB Terms of Reference.
Alexander Bassen, Chair of the GHG Protocol Independent Standards Board, said, “The onboarding of the Observing Entities is a pivotal step toward alignment across the accounting, disclosure and target-setting ecosystem. This alignment will create material benefits for corporates seeking to set and achieve ambitious climate targets by creating a more streamlined process across programs.”
Amir Sokolowski, Director of Climate, CDP, said, “GHG Protocol has long provided the clearest pathway toward a sustainable world-setting the standard by which impact on the climate can be measured. CDP has been proud to champion this pathway since GHG Protocol’s inception. Aligning the power of environmental disclosure with that of clear environmental accounting is the only way to drive systemic change throughout the economy. CDP’s role as an Observing Entity on GHG Protocol’s Independent Standards Board reinforces our commitment to ensuring the data that informs climate action is accurate, transparent, and actionable - accelerating an earth-positive future built on accountability and ambition.”
Patrick de Cambourg, EFRAG Sustainability Reporting Board Chair, said, “EFRAG is pleased to join the GHG Protocol Independent Standards Board as an Observing Entity, reinforcing our commitment to fostering quality in sustainability reporting. Our goal is to contribute to a more consistent and comparable approach to GHG accounting. This cooperation will support companies in navigating climate-related disclosures effectively, ensuring transparency and reliability in sustainability reporting. We look forward to the progress in GHG accounting that the Independent Standard Board will foster.”
Bastian Buck, GRI’s Chief Standards Officer, said, “Since the inception of GHG Protocol, GRI has been a firm supporter of its work to enable organizations around the world to account for their emissions. The GRI Standards build on GHG Protocol as demonstrated by the exceptional collaboration in the development of the new GRI 102 Climate Change Standard, which is now being finalized for publication. We are pleased to be recognized as an Observing Entity and are fully committed to support the further development and success of GHG Protocol.”
Sue Lloyd, Vice-Chair of the International Sustainability Standards Board, said, “Ensuring that GHG Protocol provides investor relevant information about climate-related risks is critically important to the ISSB. The ISSB’s climate standard (IFRS S2) is the only sustainability-reporting standard that mandates the use of GHG Protocol for reporting on greenhouse gas emissions. We are delighted that Bing Leng will be an observer on the ISB enabling us to be directly engaged in GHG Protocol’s important work.”
Alberto Carrillo Pineda, the Science Based Targets initiative's Chief Technical Officer, said, "It’s an honour to join the GHG Protocol’s Independent Standards Board. Robust accounting standards are fundamental to credible target-setting and a transparent system of accountability for tracking climate progress. GHG Protocol’s methodologies are the foundation of the SBTi’s standards, tools and guidance. Becoming an Observing Entity strengthens this foundation for the continued alignment and interoperability between GHG Protocol and the SBTi, helping ensure a clear, consistent pathway to effective, high-impact climate action."
